This is due to the fact that starred wolves seem to only spawn at night and therefore the game will actively despawn night-spawned entities that are not visible to the player.Ī starred wolf will only eat food when it is night. EDIT: they will also always try to run away during the day, even if tamed. Whether a starred wolf is tamed, taming, or wild they will despawn during the day if they leave the player's draw distance.
Valheim taming how to#
I've also researched what other people have posted about this and wanted to list the main things you need to keep in mind when taming starred wolves and my theory for how to get ones that don't despawn. So I've been trying to tame 1-star and 2-star wolves, and have been running into a couple of main problems. I am also updating my theory with the other advice you guys gave, so thank you for that as well! I will keep my original theory as is and create a new post with a definitive guide on how to accomplish this. Thank you guys so so much, I'm sorry I was not able to test it first for you guys, but I am grateful you were willing to try it out for me. I also have some pictures from xdisgrace and real_crim showing their 2-star wolf cubs they bred: I have confirmation from Ok_Library1906 and PIatinumPenguin that they bred 2-star wolf cubs that did not despawn:

One point to note, though: If you leave the area, the taming process seems to pause so you should try to stay close by. As long as it has access to meat, it should take about a day and a half to tame. You'll know the taming process has started because the wolf will have yellow hearts floating above it. Throw in three or four pieces of raw meat then retreat and the wolf should calm down. It's not going to be too happy at this point and will be attacking the walls trying to get out. Jump up onto the platform and quickly build the final bit of stakewall to trap the wolf inside. Using Eikthyr's power helps here, but it's not required. Run towards the wolf to get its attention-you shouldn't have to worry about the freezing debuff if you're not there for more than a few seconds-then sprint back to your pen. You can either do this bit fully geared-with frost resistance potions or a wolf cape-or just ensure your health is over at least 50. Once you're prepared, it's time to use yourself as bait.
